The complex consists of five connected buildings and is located in Hamburg's historic old town centre directly on the Alsterfleet and next to the historic Town Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. The ensemble of buildings date from around 1900, and the predominately listed façades have been preserved. The newly errected building behind the historic façade consists of five basement levels and six upper floors; the gross floor area totals 37,540 m². A large glass roof allows daylight permeate deep into the building. The Alter Wall project development has created a boulevard with retail facilities, restaurants, offices and the “Bucerius Kunst Forum”. It is part of the Business Improvement District (BID) “Nikolai-Quartier”. The BID is a specific Hamburg legal construct for the participation of private property owners in upgrading measures in public street areas.
